Kobe, having prospered as port town for a long time, is a beautiful, livable city, known for ex-foreign settlement that is reminiscent of the Meiji era (1868-1912), Harborland (shopping mall) and Kitano Ijinkan-gai (area spotted with foreign residences). Kobe was accredited as “25 World’s Most Beautiful Cities” in 2007 by Forbs, and also as “City of Design” by UNESCO in 2008 for the first time in Asia.
According to the Location Ratings in 2012 published by ECA International which assessed over 400 world cities in terms of living standards such as climate, availability of health services, infrastructure, safety and air quality, Kobe is the only city in Japan that was ranked in the top 10 as “The Most Livable City in the World”, the fifth rank in the world and second in Asia following Singapore.
